Adventures of Superman #499 is a historic issue in the Superman mythos, published by DC Comics with a cover date of February 1993. Entitled "Grave Obsession," this issue serves as Part 5 of the 8-part "Funeral for a Friend" storyline, which explores a world mourning the loss of the Man of Steel following his fatal battle against Doomsday.

Plot Synopsis

The central mystery of this issue focuses on a shocking development: someone has broken into Superman's memorial tomb in Metropolis and stolen his corpse.

Lex Luthor II (who has secretly cloned himself into a younger body with a full head of red hair and a beard) had filled the tomb with hidden infrared motion sensors. Consumed by paranoid delusions that Superman faked his own death—exactly like Luthor recently did to escape his previous crimes—Luthor panics when the alarms trip. He immediately commands Supergirl (Matrix) to investigate the crypt.

Supergirl discovers a tunnel dug directly up from the subterranean caverns beneath Metropolis. Alongside Metropolis Police Inspector Dan Turpin, she heads into the dark maze only to be ambushed by The Underworlders, a faction of monstrous outcasts led by the villain Clawster. As a brutal clash erupts underground, the city above spirals into mass panic and conspiracy theories regarding the true whereabouts of Superman's body
