Batman #16 (published on January 16, 2013) is the penultimate fourth chapter of the acclaimed "Death of the Family" crossover arc in DC Comics' New 52 era. Titled "Castle of Cards," this issue was written by Scott Snyder with darkly cinematic, horror-fueled pencils by Greg Capullo.

The Plot

  • The Gauntlet of Arkham: Picking up directly from the previous issue's cliffhanger, Batman breaches a completely Joker-hijacked Arkham Asylum. The Joker has turned the asylum into a twisted, medieval-themed "castle" designed to welcome his "Bat-King".
  • The Twisted Macabre: Batman is forced to navigate a horrific, theatrical gauntlet. This includes Arkham guards forced to slow-dance in Batman and Joker costumes, a flaming horse, a grotesque mural tapestry made from sewn-together living bodies, and trapped battles against mind-controlled rogues like Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Scarecrow.
  • The Ultimate Trap: At the center of the labyrinth, Batman discovers the Joker waiting for him. The Joker reveals video evidence that he has captured the entire Bat-Family (Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Red Robin). Leveraging their lives, the Joker successfully forces Batman to surrender and sit down in an electrified chair.

Core Themes

  • The Dark Court Fantasy: The issue heavily mirrors twisted fairy tales, blending motifs from Alice in Wonderland with psychological thriller elements. The Joker acts as a loyal jester trying to serve his king by weeding out the "weakness" (the Bat-Family).
  • The Isolation Argument: The Joker argues that the Bat-Family has made Batman soft, fragile, and human. He views his crusade as an act of twisted love—attempting to strip away Bruce's allies so Batman can return to being a pure, unburdened symbol of Gotham's darkness.
