Dark Knight III: The Master Race #5 (published on June 29, 2016) is the action-packed turning point of the 9-issue miniseries co-written by Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello, featuring art by Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson. Set in Miller’s iconic Dark Knight Returns universe, this issue chronicles the heroes finally launching a coordinated counter-offensive against the fanatical, newly enlarged Kryptonian zealots.
The Plot
- Gotham's Ultimatum: Following an ultimatum by the cultist leader Quar, Gotham City is descending into chaos. The citizens are actively tearing the city apart trying to find and hunt down Batman to hand him over, hoping to spare themselves from a nuclear-level Kryptonian execution.
- The Rescue of Superman: While the world panics, Carrie Kelley (operating as Robin/Batgirl) teams up with Aquaman to locate a black matter prison. Using a specialized sonic tuning fork built by Bruce Wayne, they successfully shatter the prison and free a weakened Superman.
- Evening the Odds: Back in Gotham, Batman unveils his grand tactical response to an army of flying Kandorians. Teaming up with a heavily fractured Flash (who coordinates drone strikes despite having his legs broken earlier in the series), Batman utilizes synthesized Kryptonite and a high-tech climate control system to unleash a devastating torrent of synthetic Kryptonite rain across the city, stripping the invading forces of their invulnerability.
Core Themes
- Preparation vs. Raw Power: The core theme focuses heavily on Batman’s ultimate trademark: absolute preparation. It highlights how an aging, fragile human mind can humble self-proclaimed gods when given the time to exploit a physical vulnerability.
- Rallying the World: Up to this point, the heroes have been scattered, beaten, and isolated. Issue #5 serves as the thematic rally where the classic Justice League figures begin dropping their isolationist hesitation to fight as a unified front.
The Backup Comic (Included but not attached)
Like other single issues in the series, it contains a 16-page mini-comic insert. This installment centers on Lara(the daughter of Superman and Wonder Woman) as she explores a complicated romance with the Kandorian fanatic Baal, further highlighting her internal conflict regarding where her true loyalties lie.
