Green Lantern Corps Annual #1 (2013) serves as the epic conclusion to the "Rise of the Third Army" storyline, a major crossover event where the Guardians of the Universe attempt to replace the Green Lantern Corps with a mind-controlled army.

Main Plot

The annual issue brings together the casts of all four Green Lantern ongoing titles for a final, desperate battle against the Guardians and their "Third Army". The Guardians, having decided the Green Lantern Corps is a failure, shut down the Central Power Battery and unleashed the Third Army, emotionless beings created to assimilate the universe.

The story focuses on several key converging plotlines:

  • Guy Gardner's Stand: Stripped of his ring and stranded, Guy Gardner shows immense willpower, charging back to Oa without a plan or weapons to confront the corrupted Guardians head-on.
  • John Stewart and the Reformation of Mogo: John Stewart and Star Sapphire Fatality work to restore the sentient planet Mogo (revealed to be female), who had been previously destroyed. Mogo's reformation is crucial, as the Guardians plan to use the planet for their own nefarious ends.
  • B'dg and Simon Baz: The Lanterns B'dg and Simon Baz venture into the Chamber of Shadows to locate the villain Black Hand and the First Lantern, Volthoom.
  • The Final Battle: The issue culminates in a massive, multi-colored battle on Oa as the Green Lantern remnants, along with the Red Lanterns led by Atrocitus and other spectrum Lanterns, fight against the Third Army and the Guardians.

The issue ends on a cliffhanger, as the Guardians are forced to draw on an ancient, untapped power source to finish the fight, setting the stage for the next major event: "Wrath of the First Lantern".
