Punisher Noir #1 (published in August 2009) is the debut issue of a 4-part miniseries set within Marvel's alternate-reality "Noir" universe (Earth-90214). Written by Frank Tieri with heavily shadowed, gritty artwork by Paul Azaceta, the issue adapts the classic vigilante origin story into a hard-boiled 1930s gangster film.

The Plot

  • The War Veteran: The issue centers on Frank Castelione Sr., a heavily scarred and hardened World War I veteran trying to run a small grocery store in New York City during the Great Depression. He is a solo father raising his young, impressionable son, Frank Jr.
  • The Mob's Grip: Legendary mob boss Dutch Schultz rules the streets through extortion, protection rackets, and absolute violence. When Schultz's enforcers come to extort Frank Sr., he refuses to pay, brutally beating the thugs away with a baseball bat and a meat cleaver.
  • The Execution: Realizing that Castelione's defiance could inspire a neighborhood revolt, Dutch Schultz's top hitmen—including terrifying Noir versions of classic villains like Jigsaw (a sadistic hitman who carves up his victims) and the Russian—ambush Frank Sr. and brutally execute him.
  • The Birth of the Punisher: Years later, a grown-up Frank Jr. returns from his own military service. Wearing his father's old wartime trench coat and styling himself after a fictional radio pulp hero, he takes up his father's skull-adorned combat knife and begins a merciless war to slaughter everyone responsible for his father's death.

Core Themes

  • A Legacy of Violence: Unlike the mainstream Marvel Universe where Frank Castle is motivated by the loss of his children, this story flips the dynamic. It is a son carrying out blood-soaked vengeance to honor his father's refusal to bow to tyrants.
  • Authentic 1930s Noir: The issue relies heavily on period-accurate crime tropes, featuring Tommy guns, speakeasies, corrupt cops, and street-level mob politics without any of the sci-fi gadgets or superpowers found in mainstream Marvel comics.
