Superior Spider-Man Annual #1 (published in November 2013 with a cover date of January 2014) is a standalone, highly impactful issue that explores the darker, more ruthless limits of the "Superior" mantle. Written by guest author Christos Gage with vibrant, retro-styled art by Javier Rodriguez, this issue serves as a vital bridge in the New York underworld’s perception of Spider-Man.
The Plot
- The Leverage: Peter Parker has publicly declared himself to be Spider-Man's official gadget supplier. Seeking to rebuild his criminal reputation, the vampiric supervillain Blackout decides to kill Spider-Man. To force Peter into sabotaging Spider-Man's tech, Blackout kidnaps Aunt May.
- The Miscalculation: Blackout operates under the assumption that Peter is a fragile, defenseless civilian. He has no idea that Peter's body is currently occupied by the calculating mind of Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus).
- The Trap: Otto tracks Blackout's location using supernatural connections through Daniel Ketch (the former Ghost Rider). When they confront each other, Blackout attempts to bite Spider-Man's neck. Anticipating the move, Otto equips his suit with an electrified neck plate that severely shocks and incapacitates the villain.
- The Brutal Lesson: Rather than just handing Blackout over to the police, Otto brutally tortures him to send a clear message to the criminal underworld. Unbeknownst to Otto, a terrified Aunt May witnesses this savage display from hiding. Otto lets Blackout live on one condition: he must tell all of Gotham and New York's criminals that targeting Peter Parker's family means absolute death.
Core Themes
- A Brutal Success: The strategy works flawlessly on a practical level. By the end of the issue, low-level criminals actively avoid targeting or crossing Peter Parker out of sheer terror.
- The Fracturing of Aunt May: Otto believes he has done a "superior" job protecting his family, completely blind to the emotional trauma he caused. Aunt May is left horrified by the sickening level of violence displayed by the man she believes is her friendly neighborhood nephew.
