AAFES 5th Edition (2007), titled The New Avengers: The Spirit of America, is a military-exclusive comic book published by Marvel in October 2007. Produced through Marvel's Custom Solutions department, these comics were distributed for free only to U.S. service members at AAFES (Army & Air Force Exchange Service) facilities globally.

The Spirit of America

Set shortly after the "death" of Steve Rogers, the story follows a final request from Captain America to check on two siblings serving in the military.

  • The Mission: Tony Stark (Iron Man) receives a pre-taped video from Cap concerning a brother and sister—Private First Class Matthews, stationed overseas, and her brother, a National Guardsman working on communications equipment in Los Angeles.
  • The Team-Up: Iron Man, Black Widow, and Wonder Man head to L.A. to investigate potential threats against the brother. Simultaneously, Wolverine and Cyclops travel overseas to check on Private Matthews.
  • The Conflict: The heroes eventually uncover and dismantle a terrorist operation led by A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) that was targeting the soldiers for blowing the whistle on their activities.
  • Writer: Stuart Moore.
  • Artists: Cliff Richards and Joe Pimentel.
  • Cover Artists: Dave Ross and Frank D'Armata.

As a "no cover price" military giveaway, this issue had a lower print run than standard retail comics and is now a collector's item.
