Absolute Batman #1 launched the Absolute Universe on October 9, 2024, presenting a reimagined, non-billionaire Bruce Wayne and a darker, more street-level version of the Dark Knight. The new origin story, created by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, is part of a larger initiative to modernize core DC heroes in a shared, but distinct, continuity.
No inheritance: In this universe, Bruce Wayne does not possess a fortune. He comes from a working-class background, and the trauma that sets him on his path to becoming Batman is not the death of two wealthy parents, but a senseless act of gun violence.
A surviving parent: Unlike the classic origin, Bruce's mother survives the attack. Only his father, a public school teacher, is killed. The trauma is shared with other children present at the scene—an event that occurs during a field trip to the zoo.

Absolute Superman #1 reinvents the mythos in DC's new "Absolute Universe," a dark alternate reality forged by the villain Darkseid. The story features an anti-corporate Superman whose lonely and angry existence is defined by the absence of his traditional support systems.
A Superman defined by loss:
Absolute Superman strips the hero of his traditional advantages and relationships to explore his character in a bleaker setting influenced by Darkseid's negative energy.
Without a family: In this reality, Superman's Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara, were killed during Krypton's destruction. Furthermore, he was never raised by the loving Kent family on Earth. This leaves him as a lonely and disconnected immigrant on Earth.
