Absolute Martian Manhunter # 1, released on March 26, 2025, reinvents the character as a psychological sci-fi noir where an FBI agent's mind is invaded by an alien consciousness, blurring the lines of reality. The issue focuses on FBI Agent John Jones's struggle to balance his domestic life and job with this new, mind-bending perception of the world after a near-fatal explosion.

The first issue establishes the core conflict and mystery of the series, where the "Martian" isn't an alien from Mars but an other-dimensional entity that merges with John's mind after a traumatic event.

  • The Explosion: FBI Agent John Jones barely survives a coffee shop bombing carried out by a suicide bomber named Mike Miller. He is physically fine, but internally, his world is turned upside down.
  • A New Reality: In the aftermath, Jones begins experiencing multi-colored smoke and hearing the unexpressed thoughts of people around him, a phenomenon that leads him to question his sanity.
  • The Inner Voice: A "green" voice in his head, which calls itself "the Martian," tells him that it saved him from the blast.
  • Domestic & Professional Strain: While his wife, Bridget, encourages him to take time off to heal and reconnect with his family, John, who is already a workaholic and a distant father, is anxious to get back to work.
  • Secret Investigation: Against his superiors' orders, John begins to secretly investigate the bombing, using his new abilities to gather information he shouldn't know about witnesses and the bomber's life.
  • Merging Perceptions: The issue highlights the struggle between the human John Jones and the alien consciousness, using unique, psychedelic art to represent their clashing worldviews and the gradual merging of their realities.
