Absolute Superman #1, released by DC Comics on November 6, 2024, launched the Man of Steel's ongoing title within the new, darker Absolute Universe.
Written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Rafa Sandoval, the debut issue strips Kal-El of his traditional pillars—he has no Fortress of Solitude, no loving adoptive family in Kansas, and no home. Instead, he is a gritty "Man of the People" fighting a global corporate empire.
Issue #1 Core Plot Elements & Setting
- A Divided Krypton: The issue completely upends Superman's origins. In this universe, Krypton is divided by strict class warfare between an elite scientist upper class and a lower-class Labor Guild. Kal-El's parents, Jor-El and Lara, were not revered ruling scientists, but rather lower-class laborers who wore the "S" shield as a branded scarlet letter of their guild. They watch helplessly as their planet faces imminent ecological collapse brought on by the upper class's reckless resource consumption.
- The Ruins of Kansas: On Earth, the traditional Kent farm lies completely in ruins following a mysterious past tragedy. Rather than being raised by the loving Ma and Pa Kent, Kal-El grows up isolated, shaped by a rougher upbringing without the warmth of a stable family home.
- A "Man of the People" in Brazil: The story transitions to adult Kal-El operating in Brazil. He has transformed his parents' heavy Labor Guild uniforms into a solar-powered Kryptonian tech suit, complete with a sandstone cape and an integrated AI named Sol. He uses his raw, volatile powers—including a terrifying, lava-like laser vision—to protect brutally exploited migrant miners.
- The Lazarus Corporation Threat: Superman's direct actions put him at odds with the Lazarus Corporation, a massive, globe-spanning conglomerate using high-tech private armies to strip the Earth of its resources. The issue sets up a sprawling corporate conflict as he goes fist-to-fist with their heavily armored army of Peacemakers.
- The Reimagined Supporting Cast: In a massive twist, Lois Lane is introduced not as a Daily Planet reporter, but as a hardened, tactical field agent working directly for the Lazarus Corporation. The issue ends on a cliffhanger as Agent Lane tracks down Kal-El and successfully captures him using highly advanced corporate restraints.
