Alpha Flight # 21 January 2, 1985 (with an April 1985 cover date) is a notable issue from John Byrne's classic run on the series. While often listed as "1984" in some legacy catalogs due to its late-1984 production cycle, it is officially part of Marvel's 1985 publishing year.

  • Writer/Artist: John Byrne (Story, Pencils, and Cover).
  • Inkers: John Byrne and Bob Wiacek.

"Love Wrought New Alchemy...!"

The story primarily focuses on the battle between Sasquatch (Walter Langkowski), Aurora, and the tragic villain Gilded Lily (Lillian von Loont).

  • Backstory: Gilded Lily reveals her origin as a disciple of the alchemist Diablo. She had fallen in love with him a century ago and spent her life turning men who betrayed him into gold statues.
  • The Conflict: She captures Aurora, intending to transform her as well. Sasquatch, having been turned to "gold" (actually a statue form) in the previous issue, transforms back to his heroic form to save his teammate.
  • The Outcome: During the fight, Gilded Lily's mask is removed, revealing an aged face that instantly crumbles to dust when exposed to air.
  • Subplot: Meanwhile, Snowbird is struck by intense mystical pain, hinting at future conflicts with the Great Beasts.
