Aquaman Special # 1, published in June 1988, is a one-shot comic that focuses on Aquaman's struggle with his identity and his battle against a new mystical foe called the Magus. The story is titled "Spirit & Flesh!".

The story explores Aquaman's ongoing internal conflict following the events of the previous mini-series. In that series, he adopted a new, mostly blue costume and struggled with his dual nature as both a surface dweller and an Atlantean king.

  • Internal Strife: The narrative begins with Aquaman seemingly more at peace with his emotions. The plot soon leads to a new crisis as he deals with a personal battle with his half-brother, Orm (Ocean Master), and his claim to the Atlantean throne, which Vulko currently holds.
  • The Magus: A Russian scientist named Vladimir Magus unleashes powerful Atlantean mystical forces. Aquaman must fight the Magus's magical constructs, which take the form of the Zodiac signs (Taurus, Capricorn, Leo, and Gemini).
  • Astral Battle: The core conflict involves the Magus's use of ancient crystal artifacts that are drawing the "other half" of Aquaman to them. Aquaman must disrupt the arrangement of these artifacts, a task that threatens his life.
  • Resolution: Aquaman defeats the Magus and saves the oceans by understanding the concept of his "astral twin". After pushing the artifacts apart and saving the Magus, Aquaman's astral twin rejoins him. He feels whole and balanced again, achieving a "middle road" of peace.
  • Writers: Dan Mishkin & Gary Cohn.
  • Artist (Pencils): George Freeman.
  • Artist (Inks): Mark Pacella.
  • Cover Art: George Freeman.
