Arion, Lord of Atlantis # 1, released on August 26, 1982, marked the debut of the legendary sorcerer in his own solo series. Continuing a storyline from a backup feature in The Warlord, the issue established the gritty sword-and-sorcery atmosphere of ancient, land-bound Atlantis.

 "Star Spawn—Sun Death"

The story finds the immortal mage Arion facing a spiritual crisis that threatens the ancient world.

  • The Spiritual Trap: While Arion's spirit is trapped on a dead planet within an astral realm, his physical body on Earth is possessed by a malevolent entity.
  • The Battle on Earth: Arion’s allies, the warrior Lady Chian and the tracker Wyynde, are forced to fight their possessed friend to prevent him from unleashing destruction.
  • Cosmic Confrontation: In the mystical realm, Arion and his mentor Calculha battle the Star-Spawn—a cosmic force that claims to be Arion's mother, Majistra—which seeks to block his return to Atlantis.

Key Characters

  • Arion (Ahri'ahn): The Lord High Mage of Atlantis, a demigod and master of white magic.
  • Calculha: Arion's father and mentor, a Lord of Order.
  • Lady Chian: The Captain of the Royal Guard and Arion's lover.
  • Wyynde: A former prisoner turned loyal ally and skilled warrior.
  • Mara: A teenage companion to the group.

Significance in the DC Universe

This series retroactively connected Arion to the wider DC mythology, establishing him as the cultural progenitor of the Homo magi race. In later continuities, he was identified as a direct ancestor of Aquaman, Zatanna, and Ocean Master. For a period, he was also retconned as the grandfather of Power Girl to explain her non-Kryptonian origin after Crisis on Infinite Earths.
