B.P.R.D. The Black Goddess # 1 released in January 2009, is the second arc of a major trilogy in the B.P.R.D. series, following "The Warning". The issue sets the stage for an apocalyptic conflict as the team races to rescue their abducted teammate, Liz Sherman. 

The story ties together plot threads spanning a century of in-universe history, linking the Victorian era with the present day. 

• The Disappearance of Liz Sherman: The issue begins with B.P.R.D. agent Liz Sherman having been kidnapped by the mysterious gentleman, Memnan Saa.
• Uncovering the Past: Agents Abe Sapien, Johann Kraus, Kate Corrigan, and Andrew Devon follow clues that lead them to the remains of the 1930s masked crimefighter Lobster Johnson's underground headquarters in New York.
• A New Ally: With the help of the Lobster's last surviving ally, Harold McTell, the B.P.R.D. gains vital information about Memnan Saa's history and location.
• Impending Apocalypse: As the B.P.R.D. closes in on Saa's mountain refuge, various old enemies and monstrous armies begin to band together for a final, catastrophic attack, threatening the fate of the world itself. The agents must decide if the life of a friend is more valuable than saving the world.
