Batman '89: Echoes #1, published by DC Comics on November 28, 2023, is the premiere issue of a 6-issue limited series that acts as a direct continuation of Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns(1992) movie universe. Written by original movie screenwriter Sam Hamm and illustrated by Joe Quinones, the comic acts as a spiritual "third film" that incorporates classic rogues who never made it to the screen.

The Plot: Gotham Without a Batman

  • The Disappearance: The story picks up nearly two years after the explosive events of the previous Batman '89 miniseries and Harvey Dent's destructive crusade. Batman (bearing Michael Keaton's likeness) has completely vanished from the public eye.
  • The Rise of Copycats: In the Dark Knight's absence, Gotham City has spiraled into chaos. Ordinary citizens have begun dressing up in cheap, padded replica suits to take the law into their own hands. This vigilante boom backfires tragically, leaving multiple amateur "Batmen" dead at the hands of actual criminals.
  • The Investigation: With the body count of copycats rising, the newly promoted Captain Barbara Gordon (visually modeled after Winona Ryder) tries to track down Bruce Wayne to investigate his connection to the vigilante trend, only to discover that Bruce has also been missing from his personal life for a month.
  • New Rogues Emergence: Meanwhile, the issue lays the groundwork for Burton-esque versions of classic villains, heavily pulling inspiration from unproduced 1990s movie scripts like Batman Unchained:
    • Dr. Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow): Introduced using the likeness of Jeff Goldblum, Crane is managing strange psychiatric and fear-based experiments.
    • Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Harley Quinn): Introduced using the likeness of Madonna, she is depicted as a clinical psychologist deeply obsessed with the history of the Joker.

Creative Team & Visual Style

  • Writer: Sam Hamm (Screenwriter of the 1989 Batman film)
  • Artist: Joe Quinones
  • Colorist: Leonardo Ito
  • Aesthetic: The artistic team meticulously recreates the signature neo-gothic, claustrophobic production design originally built by Anton Furst for the 1989 film, using muted color palettes to invoke the late-80s Tim Burton cinema experience.
