Batman and Robin #1, released by DC Comics on September 14, 2011, kicked off the fan-favorite ongoing title under the company-wide New 52 reboot.

Masterfully written by Peter J. Tomasi and penciled by Patrick Gleason, this issue (officially Volume 2) focuses entirely on the unique, emotionally volatile partnership between Bruce Wayne and his biological son, Damian Wayne.

Issue #1 Plot Breakdown: 'Born to Kill'

  • The Global Threat Emerges: The issue opens in Moscow, Russia, where an invisible, stealthy assailant brutally murders the armored hero known as the Batman of Moscow (a member of Bruce Wayne's global Batman Incorporated initiative). The killer vows to systematically eliminate the entire organization.
  • A Shift in Tradition: Back in Gotham, Bruce Wayne alters a long-standing personal tradition. Instead of mourning the anniversary of Thomas and Martha Wayne's deaths, he decides to honor their wedding anniversary instead, taking Damian out to Crime Alley to celebrate their lives rather than their tragic ends.
  • Father vs. Son Ideology: The narrative leans heavily into the friction between the duo. Raised from birth by the League of Assassins, Damian struggles with Batman’s strict no-kill rule. He views his father's methods as overly restrained and soft, while Bruce constantly worries about his son's underlying instinct to inflict excessive, lethal violence.
  • The University Heist: The conflict is put to the test when a group of high-tech thieves break into Gotham University to steal highly toxic, irradiated fuel rods. Batman and Robin intervene, resulting in a chaotic explosion. To prevent a full-blown nuclear core meltdown, Batman is forced to rely on pure muscle and quick strategy, draining an Olympic-sized university swimming pool into the reactor room to stabilize it.
  • The Shadow of NoBody: The final pages reveal the mastermind behind the Moscow assassination: a sinister villain named NoBody (Morgan Ducard). An old acquaintance from Bruce Wayne’s past training days, NoBody despises the way Batman Inc. brings justice into the light, setting a plan in motion to lure Damian away from his father’s teachings.
