Batman and Robin: Futures End # 1, published on September 17, 2014, is a standalone issue set five years into a potential future of the New 52 universe. It is notably the first appearance of Duke Thomas in the role of Robin.
The story focuses on a physically declining Batman (Bruce Wayne) and his complicated relationship with his new partner:
-
The Threat: Batman faces an assassin wearing the armor of The Heretic, the monstrosity that previously killed his son, Damian Wayne.
-
The Conflict: Haunted by Damian's death, Bruce refuses to let the new Robin (Duke Thomas) assist him in the fight, fearing another tragedy. He has Alfred send Duke on "distraction" missions—fighting simple robots in abandoned buildings—to keep him far from the Heretic.
-
The Resolution: As a weakened Bruce is nearly beaten to death, Alfred defies orders and sends Duke to his location. Duke saves Batman and defeats the Heretic, who inadvertently bursts into flames during the struggle, destroying the chance to verify if it was a clone of Damian.
