Batman: The Book of Shadows is a 1999 prestige format one-shot comic book published by DC Comics. Written by Pat Mills and Debbie Gallagher with dark, stylized art by Æon Flux creator Duke Mighten, this 64-page standalone story blends superhero detective work with occult horror and dark fantasy.
The Plot
The story follows a group of grotesque, distinct demons lurking in Gotham City who prey upon lonely residents. They ritualistically murder these individuals to gather enough dark force to summon a powerful, malevolent entity known as "the Archon" (or the Bornless One). According to the ancient prophecy within the Book of Shadows, the final sacrifice must be the ultimate "King of the Lonely"—Batman.
Batman stumbles onto their plot while investigating the disappearance of a young boy named Jed Foster. His investigation leads him straight into a trap where he is captured by the demons and used as the central focal point for the summoning ritual.
The ritual succeeds, and the Archon rises. However, when the entity attempts to devour Batman, the Dark Knight manages to fight back and overcome it. Severely injured and decaying, the Archon turns on its own demonic followers and consumes them to sustain itself, before stumbling into a vat of acid, disintegrating, and banishing itself back to its home dimension.
