Blackhawks # 1, released on September 28, 2011, served as the debut of a military science fiction series as part of DC Comics' The New 52 line-wide relaunch. Written by Mike Costa with art by Ken Lashley, the issue introduced a modernized, global-response military unit equipped with high-tech gear.

The series is set a few months after a "world war" event and follows a new, futuristic version of the Blackhawks organization.

• The Conflict: The team is deployed to a remote location to investigate the disappearance of a previous Blackhawk unit. They discover a terrorist cell that has gained access to powerful, salvaged alien technology, leading to a high-stakes, technologically advanced battle.
• The Tone: The issue was designed to move away from the traditional WWII setting of previous Blackhawk comics, offering a contemporary military thriller with sci-fi elements.
