Captain America #695 (January 2018) is a critically acclaimed issue published by Marvel Comics that marked the official launch of the "Marvel Legacy" soft relaunch. Written by Mark Waid with expressive, classic artwork by Chris Samnee, this standalone issue kicked off the "Home of the Brave" story arc, serving as a bright, hopeful return-to-form for Steve Rogers.

The Premise: Rekindling Hope

The comic serves as an emotional resetting of the character following the dark events of the Secret Empire crossover event. In that storyline, an evil Cosmic Cube-altered clone of Captain America led a Hydra takeover of the United States, fracturing the public's trust in the Sentinel of Liberty. In issue #695, the real, reinstated Steve Rogers takes to the open road on his motorcycle, embarking on a cross-country tour to clear his name, connect with everyday citizens, and rediscover what America truly means to him.

Plot Overview & "Captain America, Nebraska"

The narrative beautifully weaves between a flashback and the modern day:

  • The Flashback: A decade prior—shortly after first being thawed from the ice—Cap defended the small, ordinary town of Burlington, Nebraska from a violent white supremacist domestic terrorist cell called Rampart. During the police station shootout, a brave little girl named Donna tried to physically shield Cap from gunfire. Intercepting the bullet with his shield, Cap gave her a core lesson she carried for life: "I'm stronger. I protect you. That's the rule."
  • The Present Day: Steve Rogers quietly rides into town incognito, discovering that the grateful townspeople officially renamed their municipality "Captain America, Nebraska" and host an annual festival in his honor.
  • The Return of Rampart: The celebration is violently interrupted when the surviving remnants of Rampart return to seek vengeance on the town. Dropping his civilian guise, Cap swings into action alongside an adult Donna, systematically neutralizing the terrorists and reaffirming his place as an absolute symbol of pure idealism and selflessness.

Legacy Collectibility & Formats

Because it restored the historic original comic numbering, this issue was heavily sought after by fans. It debuted with a highly collectible Alex Ross Lenticular Homage Variant Cover which shifts back and forth to mimic the classic 1968 Captain America #100 cover art.
