City Boy # 1, released on May 23, 2023, is the debut of a six-issue limited series published under DC Comics’ "We Are Legends" initiative, which highlights Asian-American characters and creators. Written by Greg Pak with art by Minkyu Jung, the series introduces Cameron Kim, a new Korean hero known as "City Boy".
"Metropolis Boomin'"
The first issue establishes Cameron Kim’s tragic origin and his unique status in the DC Universe.
-
The Origin: As a child, Cameron was abandoned by his mother and learned to survive on the streets. While scavenging in a laboratory as a teenager, he was caught in a scientific experiment gone wrong that was intended to tap into a city's consciousness. Instead, the energy "chose" Cameron, imbuing him with a permanent telepathic and telekinetic link to urban environments.
-
The Present: Now a cynical, street-smart drifter in Metropolis, Cameron uses his powers for survival rather than traditional heroics. He scrounges for lost valuables—finding them by "listening" to the city’s history—to pawn for enough money to get by.
-
Conflict: His activities draw the attention of local criminals, including Boss Chung, who wants to exploit his abilities. The issue concludes with a display of raw power that catches the eye of more dangerous, high-level threats.
City Boy possesses a never-before-seen connection to the DC Universe’s urban landscapes:
-
City Communication: He can "speak" to any city he inhabits, allowing him to perceive its history, truths, and hidden objects.
-
Manipulation: He can telekinetically bend the shape of streets and buildings when threatened.
-
Animal Avatars: As his powers grow, cities manifest physical guardians or "scrappy animal avatars" made from city scraps to accompany him; notably, Gotham is represented as a rat.
