Convergence: Shazam! #1 (2015), written by Jeff Parker with art by Evan "Doc" Shaner, is a tribute to the classic Whiz Comics era of Captain Marvel (Shazam). It follows the Marvel Family as they are forced to defend their idealized 1940s version of Fawcett City against the grim, Victorian world of Gotham by Gaslight.
Plot Synopsis
For a year, the city of Fawcett City has been trapped under a dome, nullifying the magical powers of Billy Batson, Mary Bromfield, and Freddy Freeman.
- Life as Mortals: Despite being powerless, Billy and his friends continue to fight for their city. Billy works at the radio station, and together they act as street-level detectives and heroes, refusing to give up hope.
- The Dome Drops: When Telos drops the dome, the power of Shazam returns. Billy, Mary, and Freddy transform into Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, and Captain Marvel Jr. for the first time in a year.
- The Conflict: Their city is pitted against the Earth-19 version of Gotham from Gotham by Gaslight. The "Gaslight" villains—including that world's version of Killer Croc and Mr. Freeze—launch a steampunk-style invasion of Fawcett City.
- Steampunk vs. Magic: The Marvel Family finds themselves battling giant mechanical contraptions and Victorian-era rogues. The issue highlights the sharp contrast between the bright, optimistic tone of the Shazam world and the dark, gritty, industrial aesthetic of the Gaslight world.
