DC's Nuclear Winter Special # 1, released on November 28, 2018 (with a cover date of January 2019), is an 80-page giant anthology that blends holiday themes with a gritty post-apocalyptic aesthetic. The issue contains ten standalone stories exploring how various heroes find hope in nuclear-devastated futures.

Framing Story: "The Nuclear Winter Special"

The entire collection is wrapped in a narrative by writer Mark Russell and artist Mike Norton.

  • Plot: Time Master Rip Hunter crash-lands in a mid-21st-century wasteland. To avoid being eaten by a group of starving survivors (former tech employees), he stalls for time while his Time Sphere recharges by telling them stories of legendary DC heroes.
