Deathblow #1, published by Image Comics in April 1993, is the debut issue of the ongoing series featuring the elite assassin Michael Cray, created by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi. The story explores the character's moral crisis as he is diagnosed with a terminal illness and faces supernatural threats.

Story Synopsis: "Confessions"

The issue begins in a church confession booth in Washington, D.C., where Michael Cray (code name: Deathblow) agonizes over his bloody past as a soldier and government operative. Plagued by guilt and the knowledge that he has an inoperable brain tumor, he contemplates suicide but ultimately cannot bring himself to pull the trigger. He silently leaves the church, seemingly seeking redemption or a final battle, as the series shifts from a standard military thriller to one incorporating Christian mythology and supernatural warfare.

Creative Team & Characters

The comic was a product of the early Image era, known for its gritty style and focus on creator-owned properties.

  • Writers: Brandon Choi and Jim Lee.
  • Penciler: Jim Lee.
  • Inkers/Colorists: The art team included Joe Chiodo, Wendy Broome, and others, with Jim Lee experimenting with a grittier, painted art style reminiscent of Frank Miller's work.

Key elements of the issue and series:

  • Michael Cray (Deathblow): An elite mercenary and former Navy SEAL whose skills are matched only by his internal conflict and terminal illness.
  • Themes: The series explores themes of salvation, redemption, and morality, pushing the boundaries of the typical vigilante genre.
  • Flipbook Feature: The original issue was a "flipbook" that also contained the first part of another story, Cybernary #1, written and illustrated by Nick Manabat.
  • Collectibility: Early printings are notable for their embossed red foil logo on a black varnish cover.
