Detective Comics #1101, released on September 24, 2025, launches a new story arc titled "The Courage That Kills." Written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Mikel Janín, the issue explores a terrifying premise: a Gotham City suddenly devoid of all fear.

The Courage That Kills

The story begins with a flashback to Batman's early days, showing a young boy named Leo watching as a "monstrous" Batman drags his father away. In the present day, Batman investigates a ghost ship in Gotham Harbor filled with corpses that show no defensive wounds.

  • The Mastermind: Batman discovers the ship was an experiment by a new villain called The Lion, later revealed to be the grown-up Leo.
  • A World Without Fear: The Lion has unleashed a bioweapon that attacks the amygdala, the part of the brain that processes fear and inhibitions.
  • The Infection: By the end of the issue, Mister Terrific confirms that the virus is spreading and that Batman himself is already infected, putting him on a ticking clock to find a cure while losing his own survival instincts.
