Detective Comics #607, published by DC Comics with a cover date of November 1989, is a pivotal comic book issue that serves as the fourth and final chapter of the famous "The Mud Pack" storyline.

Storyline & Plot Synopsis

The issue features the story "The Mud Pack, Part Four: The China Clay Syndrome".

  • The Rescue: Picking up from the previous issues where Batman was held captive by an alliance of Clayfaces, his former Outsiders teammate, Looker (Emily Briggs), enters the fray. She uses her psionic powers to dive into Batman's mind to free him from intense, fear-induced hallucinations populated by demonic versions of his rogues gallery (such as Calendar Man, Catman, and Killer Moth).
  • The Betrayal: Once freed, Batman uses his detective work to piece together a sinister plot. He discovers that the original, Golden Age Clayface—Basil Karlo—has double-crossed the other Clayfaces. Karlo has stolen blood samples from Clayface III (Preston Payne) and Lady Clay/Clayface IV (Sondra Fuller).
  • The Ultimate Clayface: Karlo breaks into Gotham General Hospital, holding a doctor at knifepoint to force him to mix the samples. By injecting the combination into his own veins, Basil Karlo successfully transforms himself from a normal human in a mask into the superhuman Ultimate Clayface.
