Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America # 1 titled "Chapter One: Denial," was published in June 2007. Written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu, it serves as the opening installment of a five-part series structured around Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' five stages of grief.

"Denial"

The issue focuses on Wolverine, whose characteristic skepticism leads him to reject the news of Steve Rogers' assassination.

  • The Investigation: Unable to convince the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) to help, Logan recruits Daredevil, using his enhanced senses to detect if the story is a S.H.I.E.L.D. deception.
  • Infiltration: With magical assistance from Doctor Strange to hide their presence, the duo infiltrates a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. They first interrogate Crossbones, the assassin, but Daredevil confirms he is telling the truth.
  • Final Proof: Wolverine eventually reaches the room where Steve Rogers' body is being held. After smelling the body and seeing the empty space where the shield should be, he finally accepts the death as real.
  • The Warning: Logan is confronted by Iron Man and Hank Pym. Stark allows him to leave so he can tell the other heroes the truth, but Wolverine warns Stark that he will kill him if he finds any evidence of his involvement in Cap's death.
  • Stage of Grief: Denial.
  • Creative Team: Written by Jeph Loeb; Pencils and Cover Art by Leinil Francis Yu; Colors by Dave McCaig.
  • Publication: First released in 2007; also collected in the Fallen Son Trade Paperback (2016).
