Fantastic Four: Antithesis # 1 August 26, 2020 is the first issue of a four-part miniseries that serves as a historic collaboration between writer Mark Waid and legendary artist Neal Adams. This was the first full-length Fantastic Four story ever illustrated by Adams.
The story is set "in the past" (relative to the current Marvel timeline) and begins with the team handling a typical cosmic crisis:
- The Meteor Crisis: An unstoppable meteor erupted from hyperspace at near-relativistic speed, aimed directly at Manhattan. Using their combined powers—specifically Reed's ingenuity and Sue's force field—the team managed to deflect the object away from the city.
- A Beaten Herald: Upon reaching the impact site, they discovered the meteor was actually the Silver Surfer, who was severely beaten.
- The Death of Galactus: The Surfer delivered an ominous message: Galactus is dead. He had come to Earth for help after a mysterious new threat slaughtered the Devourer of Worlds.
- The Enemy: This issue sets up the search for a new cosmic villain known as Antithesis, the Negative Zone equivalent of Galactus.
- Writer: Mark Waid.
- Artist: Neal Adams (his final major work for Marvel before his passing in 2022).
- Inker: Mark Farmer.
- Colorist: Laura Martin.
- Classic Feel: The series was designed to emulate the "larger-than-life" sci-fi action of the original Stan Lee and Jack Kirby era.
- Continuity: While standalone, it appears to fit chronologically into the era following Waid's previous run with artist Mike Wieringo.
