Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman #1 (2021) is the debut issue of a two-part limited series published by DC Comics as part of its Future State event. The issue is famous for fast-forwarding years into the future to show Kara Zor-El stepping entirely out of Superman's shadow to claim her own identity as Superwoman.

The Core Plot

Written by Marguerite Bennett, the story focuses heavily on character psychology, isolation, and grief:

  • The New Moon Colony: Years into the future, a jaded and emotionally bruised Kara Zor-El has permanently left Earth. She resides on the Moon, acting as a quiet, pseudo-pacifist guardian for a colony of interstellar outcasts and refugees who have nowhere else to go.
  • Mourning Krypto: The issue opens with an emotionally raw Kara mourning the recent death of her loyal companion, Krypto the Superdog, reflecting on the unconditional love and emotional lessons he taught her.
  • The Crash Landing: Kara's quiet, monk-like life is interrupted when an alien spaceship crashes through the colony's environmental dome. Out steps Lynari, a volatile alien teenager who possesses a magical "Starfell Jewel" embedded in her body.
  • Power Theft & Trust: Lynari panics and attacks Kara, using the jewel to temporarily absorb Superwoman's Kryptonian abilities. Kara manages to calm the situation using a bluff. Taking a massive emotional risk, Kara opens her home to Lynari to help the girl learn to control her dangerous powers.
  • The Betrayal: The issue ends on a dramatic cliffhanger. After a tense argument where Lynari lashes out, she physically injures Kara—causing the normally invulnerable hero to bleed—before fleeing straight into the hands of her pursuing alien family. Realizing Lynari has been captured, a furious Kara unleashes her full power to save her.

Key Comic Book Details

  • Creative Team: Written by Marguerite Bennett with beautifully expressive, pastel-toned artwork by Marguerite Sauvage.
  • Tone: Unlike the action-heavy titles of the Future State event, this issue is a deeply philosophical indie-style character study exploring Kara's lingering resentment about always being treated as Earth's "second-best" Kryptonian babysitter.
