Genesis # 1, released on August 6, 1997, is the debut of a four-issue weekly crossover event from DC Comics. Written by John Byrne and illustrated by Ron Wagner, the issue introduces a cosmic threat to the source of all superhuman abilities in the DC Universe.

"Resonance"

The story centers on a mysterious interstellar phenomenon known as the "Godwave".

  • The Power Flux: Across Earth, superheroes experience erratic fluctuations in their abilities. The Flash loses his connection to the Speed Force, Green Lantern’s power ring ceases to function, and Captain Marvel (Shazam) loses the power of flight.
  • Varying Effects: While most lose power, some find their gifts augmented; Superman's newer electromagnetic powers intensify, and Ultra Boy of the Legion of Super-Heroes can suddenly use all his powers simultaneously.
  • Human Despair: The Godwave also negatively affects ordinary humans, causing a worldwide wave of intense hopelessness and suicidal despair.
  • Cosmic Warning: On New Genesis, Highfather Izaya and Orion consult with Takion, who discovers that the phenomenon is affecting all of creation.
  • Darkseid's Shadow: The issue establishes Darkseid as the primary antagonist, as he seeks to harness the rebounding Godwave to achieve cosmic domination.
  • The JLA: Includes Superman (in his blue electromagnetic form), Batman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman.
  • New Gods: Features Highfather, Orion, and Takion.
  • Legion of Super-Heroes: Includes Cosmic Boy, Ultra Boy, and Spark.
  • Other Heroes: Captain Marvel, Flash, Impulse, Max Mercury, and the Young Heroes.
