Green Arrow #1 (1983) marks the debut of Oliver Queen’s first-ever solo series, a four-issue limited miniseries published by DC Comics. Written by Mike W. Barr and illustrated by Trevor Von Eeden, the story blends traditional superhero action with a murder mystery styled after the works of Agatha Christie.

Plot Summary: "All My Sins Remembered!"

The story begins with Oliver Queen living in a modest apartment and working as an advocate for human rights after having lost his massive fortune.

  • The Inheritance: Oliver is summoned to the reading of the last will and testament of an old friend, Abigail Horton. To the shock of her family, she leaves Oliver $34 million and controlling interest in Horton Chemicals.
  • The Attack: Shortly after inheriting the fortune, Oliver and his partner Black Canary (Dinah Lance) are targeted in an explosion at Oliver's apartment.
  • The Origin Recap: The issue features a flashback that recaps Oliver’s origin—being thrown off a yacht by pirates and washing up on a deserted island where he mastered archery to survive.
  • Key Conflict: Oliver takes over Horton Chemicals to investigate Abigail’s death, eventually facing off against the villain Count Vertigo.

Creative Team and Production

  • Writer: Mike W. Barr, known for his work on Batman and the Outsiders.
  • Artist: Trevor Von Eeden, whose "phenomenal" and "dynamic" art on this series is frequently highlighted by critics.
  • Editor: The issue includes an editorial titled "The Amazing Archer's Odyssey" by Len Wein.

Legacy and Significance

This 1983 series is a "Pre-Crisis" story, meaning it takes place before the continuity-altering events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. While later series like Green Arrow: Year One would further refine his origin, this issue was a landmark for establishing Green Arrow as a solo lead rather than just a supporting character or member of the Justice League.
