Green Arrow #1 (2016), published as part of the DC Rebirth relaunch, marks a return to the character’s traditional roots, specifically reuniting Oliver Queen with his iconic partner, Black Canary. The issue focuses on Oliver's internal conflict as a billionaire CEO who strives to be a "social justice warrior".

Plot Summary: "The Death and Life of Oliver Queen"

Following the Green Arrow: Rebirth one-shot, this first issue of the ongoing series sees Oliver dealing with the fallout of his meeting with Dinah Lance (Black Canary).

  • The Conflict: Oliver and Dinah investigate a group of human traffickers known as the "Underground Men," who are kidnapping homeless citizens for an organization called the Ninth Circle.
  • A "Hypocritical" Lifestyle: Dinah challenges Oliver's billionaire lifestyle, arguing that his immense fortune makes him part of the very system he claims to fight.
  • The Betrayal: The issue ends on a major cliffhanger as Oliver is betrayed by those closest to him, specifically his business partner Cyrus Broderick and his half-sister Emiko Queen, who appears to side with her mother, Shado, to assassinate him.

Creative Team

  • Writer: Benjamin Percy, who stated his intent was to make the series "politically and culturally relevant" by drawing inspiration from writers like Dennis O'Neil and Mike Grell.
  • Artist: Otto Schmidt, whose "sketchy" and "expressive" art style was highly praised for its unique, watercolor-like aesthetic.
