Green Lantern #1 (Volume 5, published in September 2011 as part of the "New 52" reboot) drastically alters the status quo of the main Green Lantern title by making Sinestro the primary Green Lantern while Hal Jordan is stranded on Earth without a ring.

Main Plot

The issue picks up right after the events of War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath, where Hal Jordan was discharged from the Corps for killing the renegade Guardian Krona.

  • Hal Jordan's Dilemma: Stranded on Earth, Hal struggles to pay his bills, lives in an unkempt apartment, and has trouble holding down a job. His life as a normal human is chaotic and unsatisfying, and he is haunted by the loss of his ring and his status as a hero. He is dismissed as an irresponsible pilot by Carol Ferris and generally miserable without the power that defined him.
  • Sinestro's New Role: Meanwhile, Hal's greatest enemy, Thaal Sinestro, has been forcibly chosen by a Green Lantern power ring. The Guardians of the Universe are furious and want to strip Sinestro of the ring, but due to new, specific rules, they are unable to do so as long as the ring finds him worthy.
  • Forced Alliance: Sinestro arrives on Earth and seeks out a surprised Hal Jordan. He needs Hal's help to stop a massive threat on his home planet of Korugar, where the Sinestro Corps is brutally oppressing the population. He forces a reluctant Hal into accompanying him into space by offering him a power ring construct for one last job.

The issue ends with the pair departing Earth, setting up a reluctant partnership and a new, tense direction for the series where the hero is powerless and the villain is the wielder of the power of willpower.
