Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1 (2005) focuses on the Guardians of the Universe re-forming the Green Lantern Corps after a long absence, forcing both veteran Lanterns and new, reluctant recruits to work together against a new cosmic threat.

Main Plot

The miniseries spins directly out of Green Lantern: Rebirth, with the Guardians back on Oa and deciding to rebuild their intergalactic police force. The issue introduces the idea of a universe without the Corps' steady light and the chaos that is descending upon various sectors of space.

The story follows:

  • Veteran Lanterns: Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and Kilowog are tasked with training a new generation of ring-wielders. Guy Gardner is particularly unhappy about being assigned a teaching role, considering it beneath him, while Kyle Rayner takes a more diplomatic approach.
  • New Recruits: Several new characters are introduced as they are drafted into the Corps, often against their will. This includes Soranik Natu, a neurosurgeon from Korugar who despises the Lanterns due to the actions of the villain Sinestro, and the soldiers Vath Sarn (Rannian) and Isamot Kol (Thanagarian), who are from warring planets.

The plot quickly escalates as a new Lantern, Tarkus Whin, dies on his first day on the job when his sector's sun turns into a black hole. A mysterious threat, later revealed to be the Spider Guild, is killing new recruits by creating these black holes, which pushes the fragmented Corps to unite their ranks to face an immediate and existential danger to Oa itself.
