Green Lantern: Futures End #1 (2014) is a one-shot comic released on September 3, 2014, as part of DC Comics’ line-wide "Futures End" event. Set five years into a potential future, the story depicts a retired Hal Jordan returning to action to face a resurrected Black Lantern Corps led by a new master.

Plot and Major Events

The issue, titled "The Next Life," explores a grim fate for Hal Jordan in the "Five Years Later" continuity.

  • The Threat: Hal Jordan has abandoned his role as a Green Lantern and is living a quiet life in Coast City. He is visited by the ghost of his father, Martin Jordan, now a Black Lantern, who warns him that the dead are rising under the command of Krona.
  • Uneasy Alliance: To defeat the Black Lanterns, Hal teams up with his former enemy, the ancient scientist Relic, who possesses a deep understanding of the emotional spectrum.
  • The Final Battle: Hal and Relic use combinations of colored light to battle Krona's forces. Hal eventually sacrifices himself by drawing Krona and several Black Lanterns into a containment bubble, which Relic then blasts with full power to destroy them.
  • The Ending: Fatally wounded in the blast, Hal is taken by his father's spirit to the Source Wall. To preserve his life until a cure can be found, Hal is placed into the wall, effectively freezing him in stone.
