Green Lantern: New Guardians #0 (2012) serves as a prologue to the "Rise of the Third Army" crossover event, centering on Kyle Rayner and Carol Ferris as they search for the missing Hal Jordan.

Main Plot

The issue begins with Kyle Rayner seeking advice from Hal Jordan on how to handle the increasingly erratic and manipulative Guardians of the Universe. Finding Hal's apartment empty, he travels to Ferris Aircraft and encounters Carol Ferris (Star Sapphire), who is also searching for Hal following his apparent death at the hands of Black Hand in the main Green Lantern title.

The two heroes travel to Coast City Cemetery, where they are forced to battle a horde of Black Lantern minions resurrected by Black Hand. During the conflict, Carol uses her Star Sapphire powers to grant Kyle a vision of a potential future, revealing that he may have a destiny far greater than that of a standard Green Lantern. Meanwhile, in a separate location, the Guardians of the Universe meet secretly with the Zamarons, who decide to lend their power to the Guardians' mysterious and looming plans for the "Third Army".

Key Characters

  • Kyle Rayner: The central protagonist who is struggling with his role in the Corps and his growing ability to channel multiple colors of the emotional spectrum.

  • The Guardians of the Universe: The primary antagonists of the era, who are secretly plotting to replace all Lantern Corps with their emotionless "Third Army".
