Green Lantern: New Guardians: Futures End #1 (2014) is a standalone tie-in issue to the Futures End crossover event, set five years in an alternate future where Kyle Rayner has become the potentially tyrannical embodiment of the White Lantern.

Main Plot: "Some Need to be Shone the Truth"

The story explores a potential future where Kyle Rayner, now in full control of the vast, reality-warping power of the entire emotional spectrum and the White Lantern entity, has reshaped the universe in his image. His goal is a twisted form of utopia: universal "happiness" achieved by taking away free will and forcing a form of peace and emotional placidity upon sentient life.

The narrative is told from two perspectives:

  1. Kyle's Narration: Kyle reflects on his actions, questioning whether wielding absolute power without absolute wisdom was a mistake, and justifying his forced order as a necessary good.
  2. Saysoran's Rebellion: The story follows a lone woman named Saysoran, who is one of the few individuals able to resist Kyle's pacifying influence. She actively rebels against his new order, undertaking a journey to uncover the truth and ultimately confronts Kyle in his stronghold.

The issue is a dark character study that examines the potential consequences of having a mortal wield godlike power. It ends with the possibility of Saysoran being able to undo or challenge Kyle's universe-spanning control, leaving his ultimate fate and the outcome of this dark future ambiguous.

Key Details

  • Context: As a tie-in to the weekly The New 52: Futures End event, this issue provides a non-canonical glimpse into one possible, dark direction the Green Lantern: New Guardians storyline could have taken.
