Hawkman Found # 1, released on December 27, 2017 (with a February 2018 cover date), is a one-shot tie-in to the Dark Nights: Metal event. Written by Jeff Lemire with art by Bryan Hitch, the issue provides a psychological character study of Carter Hall while he is missing from the main DC Universe.

The story follows Carter Hall, who is trapped in the Dark Multiverse.

  • The Recurring Dream: Carter awakens in a cave with no memory of his past as Hawkman. He experiences a recurring nightmare of flying through the sky before plummeting to the ground.
  • The Manhawks: Every day, he fights off swarms of Manhawks—brutal bird-like warriors that descend from a massive ship in the sky to abduct the cave's inhabitants.
  • Breaking the Cycle: Driven to find answers, Carter finally battles his way onto the flying ship. Inside, he finds a hall of weapons from his various past lives, which begins to restore his true identity.
  • The Dark Imposter: He is confronted by a twisted, dark version of himself who claims to have imprisoned him. Carter bests this "Judge Dredd-looking" version, but the victory is revealed to be part of a perpetual dream loop designed by the demon Barbatos to keep his mind in stasis.
  • The Reality: In the main Metal narrative, it is revealed that the true Carter Hall has been transformed into a monstrous "Hawk God" serving as the dragon of the Forge of Worlds, while his conscience remains trapped in this repetitive nightmare.
  • Dark Nights: Metal Tie-In: This issue serves as a counterpart to Batman: Lost #1, exploring how major heroes are being mentally tormented by Barbatos.
  • Bridge to Ongoing Series: While a standalone one-shot, it effectively "tested the waters" for the ongoing Hawkman (2018) series.
  • Origins: The story emphasizes the importance of Nth Metal and its connection to the Dark Multiverse.
  • Writer: Jeff Lemire
  • Penciller: Bryan Hitch
  • Inker: Kevin Nowlan
  • Colorists: Alex Sinclair and Jeremiah Skipper
