Hero Hotline # 1 released by DC Comics in April 1989, is the first issue of a six-part limited series focusing on a corporate "hero-for-hire" company that handles minor superhero tasks. Created by writer Bob Rozakis and artist Stephen DeStefano, the series blends drama and humor, focusing on street-level missions rather than world-ending threats.

The debut issue introduces the daily operations of the team, who can be reached by dialing 555-HERO.

  • The Missions: The team is seen handling various mundane tasks, such as retrieving an engagement ring from a sewer and visiting a victim of domestic abuse.
  • The Main Conflict: The core of the issue features all available heroes uniting to fight Quakemaster, a supervillain causing earthquakes while searching for buried loot. The team eventually defeats him by shattering his strength-augmenting exo-skeleton.
  • Atmosphere: The story includes mini-biographies of the characters and emphasizes their role as heroes for the "common man".

The Hero Hotline Team

The agency is led by The Coordinator, a shadowy figure who is secretly the WWII hero Harry "Tex" Thompson (Americommando). The primary "Day Shift" members in this issue include:

  • Microwavabelle: An amateur scientist who uses a microwave device for flight and energy powers.
  • Mister Muscle: An obsessive bodybuilder and weightlifter.
  • Diamondette: A medical student who can make her hands hard as diamond.
  • Private Eyes: A detective using goggles for various specialized visions.
  • Stretch: A hero who uses Gingold to gain stretching powers, though it has made his body less solid.
  • Hotshot: A young metahuman capable of firing fireballs.
