Hunter × Hunter # 1 (Japanese title: The Day of Departure), the debut volume of Yoshihiro Togashi's acclaimed adventure manga, was originally published in Japan in June 1998 (Weekly Shonen Jump). It introduces the series' vast and dangerous world, where professional "Hunters" explore hidden treasures, mystical beasts, and uncharted lands.

Story Synopsis: "The Boy Who Left"

The first volume sets up the premise of the entire series:

  • Gon's Goal: Ten-year-old Gon Freecss lives on Whale Island with his aunt Mito. He discovers that his father, the legendary Hunter Ging Freecss, is not dead but abandoned him years ago to pursue the life of a Hunter. Gon resolves to become a Hunter himself, believing that if the job was important enough to his father to leave his son behind, it must be an amazing profession.
  • The Hunter Exam: Mito reluctantly agrees to let Gon leave the island if he can catch the "Master of the Swamp" fish, a feat his father once accomplished. Upon succeeding, Gon embarks on a ship to take the notoriously difficult and deadly Hunter Exam.
  • First Allies: On the journey, Gon meets and befriends two other candidates: Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta Clan, who seeks vengeance against the criminal organization the Phantom Troupe that massacred his people; and Leorio, a greedy-seeming candidate who secretly desires to become a doctor to help the poor for free.
  • The Challenges: The trio survives the initial phase of the exam, which involves a brutal sea voyage and a seemingly impossible run through a swamp, all while avoiding the cunning examiner, Satotz.
  • Gon Freecss: The pure-hearted, determined protagonist with enhanced senses.
  • Leorio Paladiknight: A pragmatic and quick-tempered candidate whose goal is to get rich.
  • Kurapika: A calm and intelligent youth with a dark past and a strong desire for vengeance.
