I Hate Fairyland #1 Image First 2022 edition is an introductory-priced reprint of the original first issue, intended to introduce new readers to the series.
I Hate Fairyland # 1, published by Image Comics, introduces Gert (Gertrude), a middle-aged woman trapped for decades in a six-year-old's body in a saccharine, violent, and maddening fantasy world. The first issue sets up her bitter personality and her quest to find a key that will let her return home.
- The Wish Gone Wrong: The story begins with a young, sweet girl named Gertrude wishing to be taken away to a magical world, a wish that is granted when she is violently sucked through a hole in her bedroom floor into Fairyland.
- The Endless Quest: Upon arrival, Queen Cloudia gives her a map and a quest to find a key to return home, which was supposed to take a day or two. The issue reveals that 27-30 years have passed (her mind has aged, but her body hasn't), and a now bitter, foul-mouthed Gertrude is still stuck there, having failed to find the key.
- A Violent Rampage: Driven mad by the relentlessly cute environment and her endless search, Gertrude is on a "bloody rampage" through Fairyland, using a giant, blood-soaked battle-axe. The first issue depicts her killing an anthropomorphic moon and eating psychedelic mushrooms in "Las Fungas".
- Queen Cloudia's Plan: Tired of Gertrude's destructive presence but bound by magical law against killing a "guest" of Fairyland, Queen Cloudia decides to bring a new child to Fairyland. If the new child finds the key first, Gertrude will become a citizen, allowing the Queen to dispose of her legally.
The issue is characterized by its darkly hilarious juxtaposition of "cute little face against Tank Girl/Deadpool-esque violent madness".
