I Hate Fairyland #1 is about Gert, a grown woman in a six-year-old's body, who has been trapped in a sugary-sweet, violent, and maddening magical world for nearly 30 years and will stop at nothing to find her way home.

Gertrude (Gert) was a young girl who wished to be transported to a magical world, a wish granted by Queen Cloudia. She was given a quest to find a key to return home, a task meant to take only a short time. However, due to a mix of bad luck and incompetence, she failed to find the key for decades. She is now an un-aging, cynical, and violent misanthrope with a giant battle-axe, accompanied by a chain-smoking fly sidekick named Larry.

The first issue establishes Gert's character and her brutal approach to her quest. Tired of the "tooth-rotting, sugarcoated world," she resorts to hacking and slashing her way through the cute inhabitants of Fairyland. The issue features:

  • Gert blowing up the anthropomorphic moon with a cannon.
  • A trip to the casino town of Las Fungas, a run-in with the Slug Lord and his Shroom Patrol, and a psychedelic escape.
  • An encounter with an assassin, Bruud the Brutal, whom Gert kills and decapitates.
  • Queen Cloudia's decision to hire mercenaries to stop Gert's bloody rampage.

The comic is a satirical, dark comedy that blends an Adventure Time or Alice in Wonderland-style aesthetic with mature, Tank Girl or Deadpool-esque humor and over-the-top violence. The contrast between the adorable, candy-colored art style and the gory, blood-soaked action is a defining feature of the series. It features crude humor and frequent use of "Fairyland" curse words (like "fluff" for "f***").
