I, Vampire # 0 September 26, 2012, reimagined the origin of Andrew Bennett as part of DC’s "Zero Month" during The New 52.
- Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
- Artist: Andrea Sorrentino
- Cover Artist: Clayton Crain
Set in 1591 England, the issue reveals the tragic transition of nobleman Andrew Bennett into a creature of the night.
- The Accident: Fleeing his father’s disapproval over his love for a maid named Mary Seward, Andrew is involved in a carriage crash that leaves him pinned and his driver dead.
- Cain's Appearance: He is approached by Cain, the first vampire, who retells his own history (including ties to Etrigan and Madame Xanadu) before biting Andrew.
- The Curse: Because Cain cannot feed on the innocent, his bite passes the vampiric curse to Andrew but also grants him a unique ability to control his hunger for human blood, unlike others of his kind.
- The Fallout: Realizing he is a monster, Andrew sends a letter to Mary vowing to never see her again, though he eventually turns her to save her, setting up their centuries-long conflict.
