Itty Bitty Hellboy # 1 released on August 28, 2013, is the first issue of a charming, all-ages miniseries that reimagines the dark and serious world of Hellboy into a set of goofy, humorous short stories. The comic is written and drawn by the Eisner Award-winning team of Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani, known for their work on DC's Tiny Titans.

The issue is broken into several short, self-contained comics that focus on a friendly rivalry between the B.P.R.D. agents (Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, Roger the Homunculus, and Johann Krauss) and the "evil" Nazi villains (Karl Kroenen, Rasputin, and Herman Von Klempt).

  • Box Fort Rivalry: A central theme involves a turf war over cardboard box forts. Hellboy and his friends have a "refrigerator" box fort, while the villains are stuck with a smaller "dishwasher" box. The villains plot an espionage mission to gain the bigger fort.
  • A Ghostly Encounter: The main synopsis notes that a ghost named Rasputin has been spotted, and the B.P.R.D. team sets out to find him and discover what he's up to. The interaction is fun and silly, rather than scary.
  • Everyday Adventures: Other short strips include the characters dealing with mundane, funny situations like trying to cure Johann's cold (which makes him sneeze himself out of his containment suit) or Roger's inability to keep his underwear on.
  • Accessibility: The series is highly approachable and can be enjoyed by both children and seasoned Hellboy collectors, as it requires no prior knowledge of the dense Mignolaverse lore beyond the basic understanding that "Hellboy and Co. good, Nazis bad".
