JLA: Gods and Monsters #1, published by DC Comics in June 2001, is a one-shot graphic novel that explores the theme of the Justice League being perceived as "gods" and the consequences of that worship. The storyline focuses on the core JLA team as they deal with a dangerous cult and a global threat.

Storyline Overview: "Gods and Monsters"

The main plot revolves around a cult that worships the Justice League as deities and uses destructive "War Wheels" to force the world to build temples in their honor.

  • The Cult: A mysterious group led by "Sister Glory" believes the JLA are actual gods and the world must worship them. To prove their point and force humanity's hand, they launch aerial attacks using destructive flying disks.
  • The Conflict: The Justice League—including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner)—must race to stop these global attacks. The team is faced with the moral dilemma and the uncomfortable reality of their god-like status in the eyes of some people.
  • The Resolution: The League must counter the cult's actions and ensure the world understands they are heroes, not objects of worship, ultimately putting a stop to the destruction and the cult's twisted agenda.

This comic is distinct from the 2015 animated movie and its prequel comics, which feature alternate, darker versions of the characters (vampire Batman, Zod's son Superman, etc.). The 2001 issue focuses on the core, mainstream DC Universe heroes.
