Justice League International #1 (2011) marks the relaunch of the team as part of DC Comics’ New 52 initiative. Written by Dan Jurgens with art by Aaron Lopresti, the issue focuses on the United Nations assembling a diverse, publicly sanctioned superhero team to handle global threats and promote international unity.

Plot Summary

  • The Mandate: The United Nations Global Security Group, led by Andre Briggs, decides the world needs a "supervised" Justice League to restore public faith in government. They reclaim the Hall of Justice as their headquarters.
  • The Conflict: Booster Gold is appointed as the team leader—a choice that immediately causes friction. Guy Gardner is so insulted by the appointment that he quits the team on the spot.
  • The Mission: The team is dispatched to Peru to investigate the disappearance of a group of UN explorers. Upon arrival, they battle subterranean rock creatures before being confronted by a giant robot known as a Signalman, an ancient alien scout.
  • Batman’s Role: Although the UN initially wanted heroes without secret identities, Batman joins the team covertly to monitor the UN’s true motives.
