Justice League of America #1, published by DC Comics in April 2017, is the start of a new series (Volume 5) that focuses on a different mission from the main Justice League: a team of heroes who are mortals inspiring mortals, rather than "gods" to be in awe of. The issue begins the storyline "The Extremist Agenda" and features a diverse, unusual team hand-picked by Batman.

Storyline Overview

The story picks up right after the events of the crossover series Justice League vs. Suicide Squad. Batman decides the world needs a different kind of Justice League—one made of unconventional heroes who can connect with everyday people.

  • The Mission: The newly formed team is immediately faced with a threat from another Earth: The Extremists, a group of self-proclaimed saviors who want to enforce their own brand of total law and order on the world under their leader, Lord Havok.
  • The Conflict: The issue primarily focuses on the team's formation as Batman and his new recruits gather the remaining members. They must learn to work together and stop the Extremists from implementing their dangerous, totalitarian rule in the fictional nation of Kravia.
  • The Tone: The series, written by Steve Orlando, aims for a mix of classic superhero action with a focus on character dynamics and social relevance, leaning into the idea that heroism can come from anywhere.

Team Roster

Batman assembles a deliberately rough and tough assortment of characters, some of whom are new to the superhero scene or have complicated histories:

  • Batman (Bruce Wayne): The leader and tactician of the new team.
  • Black Canary (Dinah Lance): A seasoned heroine and a moral compass for the group.
  • Killer Frost (Caitlin Snow): A former villain and Suicide Squad member seeking redemption.
  • The Ray (Ray Terrill): A hero with light-based powers who was previously isolated due to his abilities.
  • Vixen (Mari Jiwe McCabe): An activist and hero with the power to channel animal attributes.
  • The Atom (Ryan Choi): A prodigious young scientist who takes on the mantle from his mentor, Ray Palmer.
  • Lobo: A violent, cosmic bounty hunter whose inclusion provides much of the series' tension and humor.
