Marvels # 0 (published in August 1994) is an epilogue issue to the critically acclaimed miniseries, primarily containing a 12-page origin story for the Golden Age Human Torch and bonus content like creator insights and character pinups. It was released after the main four issues had concluded.

The main story, titled "The Origin of the Human Torch", serves as a prologue to the entire Marvels narrative, which focused on the emergence of "Marvels" (superheroes) in the 1930s and 40s from the perspective of an ordinary man, photojournalist Phil Sheldon.

  • Human Torch's Creation: The story details the creation of the original Human Torch (Jim Hammond) by scientist Phineas T. Horton.
  • Imprisonment and Awareness: Following public fear and the android's inability to control his flames, Horton encases his creation in concrete. The narrative uses an internal monologue to show that the Torch was conscious and educated about the world during this confinement, reflecting on the nature of life and freedom.
  • Ignition and Freedom: A crack in the concrete eventually allows oxygen to reach the android, causing him to ignite and blast his way out, finally able to control his powers.

In addition to the main story, the issue also contains supplemental material that provides insight into the creation of the groundbreaking series.

  • Text articles from writer Kurt Busiek and artist Alex Ross about the development of Marvels.
  • Character sketches and painted pinups of various Marvel superheroes by Alex Ross.

The issue is frequently collected in trade paperback and hardcover editions of the main Marvels series.

  • Writer: Kurt Busiek
  • Artist/Cover Artist: Alex Ross
