Midnighter and Apollo # 1 published by DC Comics on October 5, 2016, launched a popular six-issue limited series that explored the dynamic of one of comics' most iconic queer couples as they faced down supernatural threats.

Picking up after their recent reunion at the end of the previous Midnighter series, Midnighter and Apollo are back together as partners and lovers.

• Subway Pirates: The issue begins with the pair fighting "subway pirates" in Los Angeles and demons in Opal City. During the action, Apollo is disturbed by Midnighter's brutal methods, highlighting a difference in their approaches.
• Bendix's Scheme: The villainous Henry Bendix, the man who originally created Midnighter, sells a magical rifle, the Ace of Winchesters, to the Lords of the Gun, planning to make the heroes suffer.
• Apollo's Fate: Bendix arranges for the demon Mawzir to attack Apollo, leading to Apollo's soul being dragged to Hell. Midnighter kills Bendix (who gives him a choice between killing him or teleporting immediately to Apollo) and then seeks the help of the magician Extraño to mount a rescue mission into the underworld.
