Nightcrawler # 1, published in April 2014, is the first issue of a new series that follows Kurt Wagner as he adjusts to life after being resurrected from the afterlife, determined to live life to the fullest despite the drastic changes in the X-Men world.
The issue opens with Nightcrawler and Wolverine engaged in a training session in the Danger Room at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. The session highlights Wolverine's lack of a healing factor at the time and Storm has to intervene to prevent him from seriously injuring Kurt.
- A Changed World: The narrative establishes that Nightcrawler has returned to a very different world from the one he left: Professor Xavier is dead, Cyclops is a fugitive, and the X-Men are divided.
- A New Lease on Life: Feeling like an outsider and struggling to find his place, Nightcrawler decides he won't waste his second chance at life. He wants to embrace adventure, romance, and swashbuckling.
- The Pursuit of Love: His mission leads him to track down his former love interest and foster sister, Amanda Sefton (Jimaine), a powerful magic user.
- An Unwelcome Return: Nightcrawler finds Amanda just as she is attacked by a technologically advanced assassin. He defends her, using his agility and teleportation powers to defeat the attacker. It is revealed that someone is hunting those close to him, and his return from the dead may be the cause of these events.
The issue sets up a globe-trotting adventure as Nightcrawler and Wolverine team up to uncover the mystery behind the attacks and right some wrongs.
- Writer: Chris Claremont, who had a legendary run writing the X-Men and previous Nightcrawler miniseries.
- Artist: Todd Nauck.
- Cover Art: Chris Samnee.
